Backing up

Your files, pictures and music files are all safe on your machine right? Most modern drives are fairly reliable as being solid state they no longer have moving parts. This means there are less components that can fail. But they still do fail and we see machines come in on a regular basis with customers complaining that the machine is “doing odd things” and once the drive is changed the machine starts to behave normally again.

The issue is with solid state drives backing up becomes even more important. Whereas with the “old” style drives you could take them apart and do fun things with the platters that store the information this is no longer possible with solid state drives. Solid state drives are soooo much faster though so you wouldn’t want a machine without one in.

So what is the answer? Backup your data elsewhere. This can be to an external drive (just be aware that these are just traditional drives in a case so can fail) or to the internet. The internet route is the one we recommend. Why?

  • It just happens – you create something and it gets backed up. You don’t need to worry about plugging in a drive and remembering to set a program running
  • Most online systems keep multiple versions of your backup so if there is something wrong with one of the backups you cab choose another one
  • The internet won’t fail on you like a traditional hard drive. Customers often bring in their back up drive so we can recover data only to find this no longer works and has not been for some time

Typically costs start from £50 for the year for 250gb of space.

Or if you need the Office programs as well, take out an Office 365 Personal or Family subscription. The Personal subscription starts at £60 for the year but includes access to 1TB of space. You can use Onedrive to automatically backup your Documents, Desktop and Pictures folders. Onedrive is a free program that is included in Windows 10.
